Review the Extended Desktop directions, at > Use external monitors with your Mac - Apple Support

go to Apple > System Preferences > Displays

select the Arrangement tab, un-check Mirror Displays and arrange the displays.

go back to the Displays tab, hold the Alt (option) key and click on the Scaled button.

choose the correct resolution for the iMac display and then for the external display.

then go to Apple > System Preferences > Mission Control and un-check all of the boxes.

which should give you one dock that is the correct size.

If not or that's not exactly what you want? At least having those boxes un-checked, will make it easier to setup the dual display to your liking.
