I have a Macbook Air from 2014 that is not showing any software updates however is still using OS X 10.9.5. I am wondering what software to update it to? and also how to know how much capacity it has to be updated? I don't want to have problems after attempting an update to Sierra or another operating system.

A 2015 MacBook Air can be upgraded to Mojave. The reason you are not finding anything in Updates is because it is not an update but rather an Upgrade.
Be sure to make a TIme Machine backup before upgrading. Also check for third party app compatibility here:
Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.
Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
