"Quality & Media" option missing from Print options, replaced with "Printer Features"

Apple has been changing their applications in some way such that for (certain?) Canon printers, the Print dialog has changed and no longer has the "Quality & Media" option.

Here is an example, from Safari:

For a while, this only affected Pages (and maybe some other iWork apps), but didn't affect, for example, Preview.

As of Mojave however, it now affects Preview as well as Safari. It also affects some other apps. I haven't been able to figure out what the correlation is.

Here are the print options from a non-Apple app, Chrome:

Ok - and now for the important part - why this matters.

Most of the settings that would normally be spread out and organized over the other menu options MAY all be in Printer Features - however, printing to the CD/DVD tray on these printers does not work if you have the "new" print dialog. The options are all there, and you can set them, but it will not print this way (the job gets held up in the print queue with an error saying "Stopped - No pages found!".

If you were to open the same exact document in a different application. For example, say you had a PDF. You open it in Preview, try to print with the "Printer Features" print dialog, it will give the error shown above. But open the same document in Adobe Acrobat Reader, which gives you the "Quality & Media" dialog, and it will work perfectly.

Other things I've tried that did not work:

  • Removing and re-adding the printer
  • Removing the printer and adding it but setting it up as an AirPrint printer instead. When you do this, the options for CD/DVD printing are not presented at all for this printer (TS9020).
  • Removed the printer, installed the most recent drivers
  • Removed the printer, installed various older versions of the drivers

You actually can print to the CD/DVD tray using AirPrint on some Canon printers. For example, for some reason the TS8200 series doesn't have Canon drivers available, so you have to use AirPrint. With that printer you just need to select the paper size as 120x120mm, then the options are available:

Are you using a Canon driver or the AirPrint driver?

AirPrint will never in any way print to a CD. You need special software to do that, and probably only Canon can provide it.

I don't have a Canon printer but Media & Quality show up for my Epson printer in Preview and Safari. Can't speak to what it offers in Chrome.

You're not wrong, but I think it's also incredibly easy to support the feature since it's simply telling the printer a few different bits. Printing on the CD/DVD tray, from the computer's point of view, is just as easy as printing to any other tray in the printer (Rear/Bottom/Manual/Etc), it's just telling the printer Print to tray 1/2/3 - the printer is the part that really carries the burden of actually making it work.
