https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202784 which basically says check the documentation with your NAS device. Apple does not support NAS technology so you need to be in touch with your NAS developer and ensure you always keep their software up-to-date.

LOTs of NAS developers say their products are TM compatible. Apple never has supported NAS techology directly with exception of the Time Capsule product however Apple has now exited the router market which included the Time Capsule.

FWIW Western Digital say their MyCloud NAS is compoatible with Time Machine.
