Automatic deleting of unused contacts
is there a setting on iPhone that will cause contacts that are not used after a certain period of time to be automatically deleted?

No, that is not a feature of any Contacts app from any provider that I can think of.
I'm not even sure it's a good idea. For example, would you want the contact info for a doctor you see only every few years to be deleted? Or for the insurance agent who sold you a life insurance policy 20 years ago?
