iPad activation

My old IPad 2 is suddenly trying to activate - first time in 8 years. Get message saying could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable. Can do nothing at all on IPad. Message also says try connecting iPad to iTunes to activate it but cannot do ANYTHING on iPad.
