Watch complications

I want to put the message icon or complication on my Apple Watch face. I keep choosing it on my watch app on my phone but it never shows up. All the other complications do. Is this normal?

No. I have the Message icon on my Infograph face. Double check your iPhone watch app settings for Messages. My settings are Custom, Allow Notifications, Send, Haptic and Send Read Receipts.
