iPhone XS Water issues

So i just had to replace my iPhone XS, after my water bottle was tipped over and spilled in my bag and my phone got wet and it shut off. How come it was damaged so easily if it is able to be splash free, and able to be under 2 meters of water of submerged for 30. Mins?

How come the new iPhones don’t have the same water options as the Apple Watch? That would help make it water proof. This needs to happen!

Apple's design is meant to provide a certain level of "ingress protection" when new, but they specifically note that it isn't permanent and that liquid damage isn't covered under warranty. This is pretty standard in the electronics industry. They use an adhesive seal that may be water resistant to a point but doesn't last forever.
