I found a search on this subject before, and it appears that High Sierra changed the default setting of the hard drive or any external drives to not be selected in Finder Preferences. Is this because Apple is trying to force us to put everything on the iCloud?

Not sure why the devices are not automatically shown in the update. It may be to prevent changes to home folder permissions unnecessarily, or for a cleaner Finder window.
If you want to see the devices, do the following:

Thanks...yeah, sorry I didn't mention that I figured out how to do it...just trying to find out why Apple decided to eliminate it. Seems like the typical approach in a competitive industry is to "force" customers to use what they or make it hard to use other sources/resources to kind of make the "default" benefit the company.
Just to add, anything in the Finder Sidebar is an alias. So you can drag any file or folder you want to the Sidebar to keep it there.
