I movie crashes when edit tab touched

When attempting to do a project in iMovie, whenever I click on the "Edit" tab the entire program crashes. I am unable to do anything. Can anyone help to find a solution?

First, make sure that you have updated/upgraded your iMovie version to current 10.1.12 and operating system to current Mojave. If your computer specs won't allow that, update to the newest versions that you can.

Sometimes a corrupt preference can cause iMovie to misbehave. One easy thing to try is to delete preferences. You can do that by opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Now see if you can use the Edit menu item without crashing.

If no luck, try booting up in Safe Mode (see Finder help menu for instructions). Once everything has loaded, immediately shut down your computer and reboot in normal mode. See if that cures it.

It also might be a problem confined to just one project. Try creating a new project and see if that one works O.K.

Another thing you can try is to open iMovie in a new library. Open iMovie while holding down the Option key only, and then select to create a new library in the box that appears. See if the Edit item works correctly. If so, you can copy your projects to the new library.

All else failing, you can try redownloading iMovie.
