Older Mac Pros and the new MacOS Catalina compatibility

Why are those of us with the older 2012 MacPro desktops left out again?  Catalina, the new MacOS, can run on the 2012 versions of the Mac mini, iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and even the plain ol' MacBook. I am not interested in a 2013 Mac Pro trash can. It was, and still is, not suited to my work. The $6,000 minimum for an entry level new Mac Pro is just too much for an upgrade to what I already have.

Hello!

There are probably various components of the new OS that are not compatible with the older hardware. This was the same when they upgrade to macOS Mojave but once it was released they said you could upgrade if you updated your graphics card.

Maybe there will be a way for you to get the latest OS when it comes out.

Let me know if this helps!

I don't accept Apple's reason for Catalina not running on a MacPro5,1 Mid 2012.

They say that it's because the video card is not Metal compatible.

That's the same thing that they said about Mojave.

I upgraded my video card and Mojave runs just fine.

This is not about being Metal compatible, it's about Apple wanting to sell you a new machine.

I paid $$$$ for my mac Pro back when it was new; and it still runs like new.

Just one more reason to run Linux and buy media from Amazon.

Yep, I agree, it might be some hardware that needs to be "accommodated." Some of us have been limping along on these older tower Macs just waiting for a better design than the 2013 version to come along. (Aside: I did upgrade the graphics card so I could run Mojave.) Now that the new tower Mac Pro is about here, we are left with the sticker shock of $6,000. It is going to take a while to either come up with the cash or decide if it is even worth it. I just think that if you can take care of all the other older 2012 Macs, you can take care of the "heavy" and long-term users with your Mac Pro towers.

Whilst a 'classic' Mac Pro 2012 or 2010 is more than powerful enough to run Catalina and could have a video card adequate to this purpose the general consensus as to why it is not officially support for Catalina is that the now ancient Intel Xeon chips used in these old Mac Pros are not going to be 'patched' by Intel to fix some discovered security issues.

It is therefore believed that Apple have therefore taken the view that they will not support Catalina on machines with this issue.

Im currently in the same predicament as i have a Late 2013 mac pro & also an IPad Pro 12.9" which i purchased at the same time; and have been excluded from this awesome feature; Sidecar. I think its rather ridiculous when i contacted apple support about this problem they directed me to there 2019 mac pro model that "hasn't even been released yet" and told me to trade in my mac pro for this newer model. the reasoning behind why i couldn't access this feature was because of; from their words " hardware compatibility" which i find hard to believe. Talk about apple using "Planned Obsolescence". this is a big turn off for me and would highly consider not purchasing any more apple products because of this. i also find it funny that you can just use the duet app to achieve a similar result.
