I have downloaded plenty of apps from App Store, can i check if i can transfer the apps and use it from the external hard drive instead of running from my mac hard disk?
Is there any limitation for doing this and what is the correct way to do this?

Drag to the external drive, double-click, test to see if it is working correctly. For most applications there should be no problem.
One thing to take into account is that probably the App Store will not “see” these applications and may fail to offer you updates later on.
