Iphone not charging with Apple charger

Why does my apple charger, which came with my iPhone, suddenly not charge my phone and claim that the accessory may be not supported?

Start here: If you see an ‘Accessory may not be supported’ alert

Also see: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won‘t charge
