How do I exit "load recovery os" before or at the 'choose language' screen?

My sons MacBook Air (11 inch, mid 2013) model identifier 'macbook air 6,1' either MD711xx/A or MD712xx/A lost the screen. It was repaired in New York City and sent to me in Pennsylvania. I wanted to exercise the screen to confirm it would work for more than 3 hours (this is the second screen repair) before shipping it to him in Singapore.

Not having the password I could not exercise the screen because it would shut down after a few minutes.

A message popped up after several restarts saying something like "I see you are having trouble with your password. Do you want to go to recovery mode?" Impatiently I said yes.

The machine apparently rebooted into a recovery OS and now displays a screen prompting me to choose a language. The screen has 'Language' at the top with 'English' selected and is waiting for me to choose the "circled right arrow" to continue installing the Recovery OS.

Rather than choosing the "circled right arrow" to continue I am just powering down. Further power ups boot to the same "choose a language" screen.

How can I exit this bootup? How can I revert to the original "boot to password" screen? If I continue to the Recovery OS would I be able to then revert to the original "boot to password" screen?

I have had no luck doing web searches since I can not frame the correct question.

Thank you for your help.
