So I'm stuck without an apple id, and can't restore anything: not the gmail, not the apple id. Locked out of the device completely. Is all hope lost and there is no way into the device, or should I take it to a professional?
(I should also mention that its the identification lock that is missing.)

Has he tried : If you forgot your Apple ID - Apple Support ?
Or, and if you bought the device new (i.e. it’s not second-hand), you could try going to an Apple Store (make a Genius Bar appointment if you do) or try contacting iTunes Support online (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww) and see if they can remove the device from the account - they are likely to want to see proof of ownership before they might help e.g. original receipt with the serial number on it

He could see if he can reset the questions : If you forgot the answers to your Apple ID security questions
If he can’t reset them himself he could contact Support in the country where he lives and see if they can reset them for him : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww (click on your country's flag, the country where he lives, and which is therefore the country on his account ; click on Contact Support towards the top right ; click on Get Help under 'Talk To Us’)
Yes, I meant the activation lock (forgot how it was called).
I did try "Forgot your apple ID"- didn't work because he can't remember the answer to the questions there.
It is a first hand, and I'm pretty sure we have the receipt. I'll try to go to an apple store and see if they will be able to fix it. Thanks a lot mate!
