Time machine did not backup my desktop, documents, root level folders or save any system preferences. It DOES seem to be using 900GB of storage, so it’s probably there somewhere??
any idea how to access files lost in a Time Machine recovery?

Ok, so Spotlight had not been working. I added my users folder to spotlight > privacy > ignore. Then I removed it. This apparently adds that folder to Time Machine’s ignore list too, unbeknownst to me, therefore I did not know I had to undo it in a second place. This is why Time Machine did not back up anything and why I lost everything.
Actually no, it did not backup any of my files besides applications. I lost everything.
