My MacBook Air says that it’s updated but it’s on 10.9.5 and it needs to be higher so I can be able to download app but it won’t update

How do I update my MacBook 11inch, Mid 2013 to 10.12 know that when I go update it for software update or the app store it says it’s up to date but it’s on 10.9.5

MacBook Air (as you say in your topic title) or MacBook (as you say in the body of your text)? There is a huge difference and you want us to get it right, don't you? ;-)
