I heard that if the black glass is damaged then repair isn't possible and only option is replacement

I recently fell with an iphone on my hand. The front display has cracked near the right bottom corner and along with that, the black glass also has cracks. But the screen is working all fine. I heard that if the black glass is damaged then repair isn't possible and only option is replacement. Just wanted to know my options.

That used to be the case, but now there are laser machines flooding the US independent repair market that can safely remove the back glass. You will likely be able to find someone local that can do a back glass replacement. Your local IRP (Apple-certified Independent Repair Provider), or any trusted independent repair shop will be able to help you. Apple retail stores and Apple authorized service providers will have no solution for repair.

There's just only a bit of cracks on the back though. So is it not possible to just change the upper display screen without doing anything to the back and preventing any problems later?

Apple or and AASP won’t do that as they would consider it an incomplete job. A third party repair shop might do it, but wouldn’t have access to a genuine part unless it’s a salvaged part. It’s up to you.
