My disk is full (zero bytes available) and I can't open applications such as Chrome or delete any files to free up space. When I move things to trash they don't appear in the trash folder and as such I can't click empty trash. Please help.

It'd be more common to use Finder to delete files, and not Chrome.
Find some files you no longer need.
Then use Option-Command-Delete to immediately (and permanently) delete the specified file. That bypasses the trash.
Then find some files you do want to keep but don't need on your boot disk, and move those to external storage.
