how do do I retrieve old messages quickly? Say, for example, I wanted to get 4-7 years worth of texts (both numbers were and are on iPhones) from a text conversation thread. How would I go about this most efficiently?
It’d be great if I could make the entire thread a pdf and just rock it from there by printing the exchange. I’m sure this has come up before, but I see no satisfying answers.

If you were syncing Message with iCloud and deleted them, they are gone. If you weren't syncing Messages with iCloud, restore from your backup. Restoring from a backup erases all data currently on your device. Any data newer than when the backup was made will be erased. A restore is an all or nothing restore. You can't access a backup and only restore certain files.
