Hey doretha16,

If I understand correctly, you want to manually manage which songs are synced to the iPod touch instead on syncing all of them. You can do this by following the steps in this article.

Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using iTunes on your computer

Please don't hesitate to let us know if the steps resolved your issue or if you need additional assistance.

Just to be clear:

  • If you see iTunes "syncing" every song every time you sync, and this is what you are referring to, just let it do that. It's working on your behalf
  • If you mean, "how do I add only the songs I want to my iPod at Sync, and not all of my Library", read on

Although it has been suggested that you use manually manage, I prefer to use Sync and to set specific options that will do exactly what you want. In fact, there are two separate things you can do.

  • Connect your iPod to iTunes. Click on the iPod icon that will appear in the top of the iTunes window:

  • which will display the Settings/Summary screen shown below
  • Make sure that Sync only ticked songs and videos is ticked (checked). I'll explain this later:

Now click on Settings/Music (1.) follow the steps listed below:

  • Make sure that Sync Music (2.) is ticked
  • in step 3., choose Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres, which will cause section 4 to display
  • in section 4, choose the music that you want to be on your iPod. Section 4 continues below the view shown in my screenshot
  • click on the Apply (or Sync) button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window (not shown in my screenshots)
  • once the Sync has completed, eject the iPod

When you next Sync, any changes to the selected Playlists that you have added to your iPod will be copied onto the iPod by the Sync. You only need to go through the procedure above if you wish to change your selection of Playlists, artists, albums or genres.

One more thing - that ticked songs thing I mentioned earlier. Suppose you now want to remove a song that is on your iPod, but leave it in the Playlist, all you need to do is untick the song in your Library. At the next Sync, the song is removed. To add it back to the iPod, simply turn the tick back on and Sync again.

To tick or untick a song, use the Songs view in your Library. Tick boxes appear to the left of all song titles. This is the tick that controls whether the song is on the iPod (providing it's in a Playlist that you have selected to sync). Be aware though, unticking a song means it will be skipped when playing music in iTunes itself.
