I'd like to purchase an Apple watch solely for the purpose of connecting with the Fireboard app. It's an app that connects to my barbecue grill in order to monitor temperatures. Problem is I have an android phone thru work. I don't really care about all of the other features, but want to make sure that I'll at least be able to use the app and tell time.

You need an iPhone to activate an Apple Watch. See if the grill company provides an app for the Android phones in Google Play.
It will still need to stay connected to that other person's device. Why not just watch it on the Android phone? While the Apple Watch can work temporarily without its paired phone, it needs to remain near the paired iPhone.
They have an android app as well. What if i used someone else's phone?
