received an email today stating I needed to update my icloud account within 24 hours or it would be permanently locked does anyone know if this is a scam sure sounds like it!!!!!!!

You are correct...it is a scam!

Avoid phishing emails, fake 'virus' alerts, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support explains what you can do, and how you can report the email.
