Is it ok or even possible to delete ichat transcripts to save space on my Mac?

I'm wondering if I can free up space on my Mac by deleting ichat transcripts. Is that even possible and is it ok to do this? I set my message preferences to keep for 30 days on both my phone and my Mac, but there are many older messages in my library.

It is probably best to delete them from within the app. It maintains an index of the chats, so deleting them out from under the index could corrupt the index. However, that probably can be resolved.

Text files are very small in size. A thousand of them would still be beat by a single image file.
