Adding music from iTunes to your iPhone should be a simple procedure.

It sounds as though you have not previously added music to your iPhone. In that case, you need to choose and set up options for how iTunes adds music to the phone. Once you do this, you will only need to connect the phone to your computer for this to happen automatically.

  • Begin by connecting the phone to your computer and wait for iTunes to see it.
  • Once iTunes sees the phone, click on the icon at the top of the iTunes window:

  • That brings up a screen like the one below (this is the phone's Settings/Summary screen):

  • Turn on the two options that you see ticked: both are useful. Now select the Music option (just below the Summary option):

  • On this screen (shown below), you can choose options for syncing the music in your iTunes Library with the phone. Don't panic, it's not that complicated):

  • You are now on the Settings/Music screen (1.)
  • Select the Sync Music (2.) radio button (so that there is a tick in the box)
  • In step 3. I suggest you select Entire music library, which will add all the ticked songs in your Library. Note that section 4. will not be visible
    • did you notice the option on the Summary panel, to Sync only ticked songs and videos? It can be useful, which is why I suggested that you turn it on
    • if you had chosen Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres in this step, section 4 appears. Unless you have a very large library, or specific needs, you do not need this option now. (I use it, because I have more music in my library that I can fit on my iPod Touch)
  • After making your selection, click on the Apply (or Sync) button in the lower right corner of iTunes (not shown in the screenshots).
  • Once the Sync has finished, that's it. Now you can safely disconnect your phone from iTunes. You will probably see an eject icon at the top f the iTunes window, just above the battery icon. If it's there, use that to eject the phone

For the future, all you will need to do is:

  • Add new music to your iTunes Library
  • Make any changes to the music, such as correcting typing errors, adding songs to Playlists, etc.
  • Connect your phone to your computer and let the Sync complete
  • Eject the phone

That's it.
