What is this box
This has suddenly appeared and I have no idea what is it or how to get rid of it. Can you help?

That indicates that the viewer is zoomed into the image. Use Zoom popup with the percentage showing and sit it to Fit.

While you're zoomed in on the viewer, you can click and drag around in that little rectangle to adjust what portion of the viewer you are looking at.
