battery fully charged last night, this morning it's dead

Just got the Apple Watch series 4 two days ago, gave it a full charge last night before bed, woke up and it's pretty much dead. I figured a fully charged battery would last at least a full day. What did I do wrong?

With the Apple Watch Series 4 a full charge should last a couple of days. I would check to make sure you have removed all plastic material from the Watch and the charger. If that was not your problem you can return the watch within 14 days of purchase, together with proof of purchase, for a full refund. I somehow think you didn't remove all of the plastic packaging material.

Why are you not charging the devices overnight? That's best practice. Using the Apple Watch for sleep monitoring complicates things but, generally, if you put the watch in Airplane and Theatre mode overnight, battery drain is minimal and you can still monitor sleep.

I would disagree that an Apple Watch 4 should last a "couple of days". Apple says 18 hours. I find that to be pretty accurate.

If you consistently get less than 18 hours of use from the battery over the next week, I'd take the watch back and exchange it.

Again, if you're not seeing a full day's worth of use most times over the next week, return the Watch for a different one.

There's nothing that says you have to keep the devices charging near your bed. But, even if you do, there are some very nice, attractive charging stations.

Charging your phone overnight is best practice because, if your phone is plugged into power, connected to WiFi and has the screen locked, it will automatically back itself up to iCloud (assuming you have that feature enabled). Not only will you start each day with a fully charged phone, you'll also never lose more than about a day's data should something untoward happen to your phone.

I don't always charge my watch overnight. I often put in on to charge a couple of hours before I go to bed. That way, if I want to wear it to track sleep, it's fully charged. I put it in airplane and theatre modes for the night. In the morning, I drop it back on the charger while I'm showering and dressing. I usually end the day with about 30% charge.

Thank you for the suggestion! The plastic was fully removed, and I was able to fully charge the watch last night before bed at 11:00pm. Battery was dead at 6:30 am with no use overnight, unless there are functions that are open that drain the battery overnight? Since this is new to me, I’m not sure how to shut things down. I’ll try again tonight and if I get the same results I’ll go subject myself to the Apple Store.

I suppose I could do that, I’m just surprised I would have to. But if it’s draining 63% in seven hours of no use, I’m worrying that even charging it overnight won’t be enough to make it through a ten hour day of active use. I also don’t like the idea of a power strip by my bed with my devices all plugged in charging overnight, but I guess that is becoming modern decor. Thanks for the reply!

Went to bed at 11pm, phone had 60% charge, watch 100% charge. Woke up at 6 am phone at 17%, watch at 37%. During the night I received one “check in” text from my son in college, that’s it. Not happy with battery life for either device, but my phone is about three years old so I get that. I don’t have two hours before leaving for work to charge the watch and I’m assuming if I wear it and use it for the next ten hours it’ll be dead before I leave work based on the way it drained over seven hours of sleep.
