I just bought a new iPhone Xr, i use icloud. However now if I take a picture or make a video, it appears in the complete list in Photos on iMac but I am unable to enlarge or play it. It comes up with a grey exclamation mark. See print screen. If I surf to the icloud website all is fine.
Any ideas?

You missed one of my questions. "If you display the Info panel, what file extension is displayed with the file name?"
I suspect when you view the info panel for the items from your iPhone XR, it will show filetype HEIC or HEIF for photos and HEVC for videos. These are the "new photo encoding formats" I mentioned. Support for these formats is only available in macOS High Sierra and above. Your Yosemite system doesn't understand them.
You can switch your iPhone XR to shoot in "Most Compatible" instead of "High Efficiency" in Settings > Camera > Formats.

What version of macOS is running on your iMac? What exact model is the iMac?

Newer iPhones use new photo encoding formats that may not be supported on older Macs running older software.
I think you just need to give it time to download.
