Is there any way for me to contact the original owner? I do have the serial number, and if you know anyone who has lost or had their iPad Air 2 stolen if they can tell me the serial number then I will return it to them.

There isn't a way to track the original owner. Apple can't/won't help because of privacy restrictions.
Go to the Frequently Asked Questions section and look at the recycling options.
Apple wouldn’t even accept it, or if they do, they’ll just recycle it. Apple takes no role at all with people’s lost or stolen personal property. Just like every other consumer electronics company does.
dang that sucks!! do you think if I sent it to apple could they return it to the original owner then? I don’t want to keep it if it wasn't meant to be there
