Connections to Thunderbolt 2

I am attempting to connect a USB 3 hub to a thunderbolt port on my 27" 5K late 2014 iMac but have run into a problem with connecting cables can anyone offer advice?

Your iMac has Thunderbolt 2 ports, and those won't run USB hubs, even with a Thunderbolt 3 adapter. It will run a Thunderbolt dock (Thunderbolt 3 with the adapter) to provide some more USB ports.
