external hard drive won

After I eject it, my external hard drive will only spin down for about 2 seconds before it spins up again. Even though it's still unmounted, if I unplug the USB for the drive while it's spinning I get an error message the next time it's plugged in (and I can hear the drive make a nasty scraping sound as it spins down).

How can I get the drive to spin down for good after it ejects? All I can find online is this script from the early '00s which gave me an error message when I tried to run it.

yields

error "hdiutil: eject failed - No such file or directory" number 1

Thanks for considering!
