It's a scam. And, it is an old one.

Just force quit Safari, then re-open Safari while holding down the Shift key.

That will prevent Safari from reloading the sites that were open when you quit.

If you keep getting popups, then you may have installed Adware. You should be able to remove it with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware for Mac.

I have MalwareBytes Anti-Malware for Mac and will use it if it becomes a problem. I suspected that it was some kind of trick. They make it look like a message from Apple. Very sneaky bunch.

I did not open the message and closed down Safari and rebooted. So far no recurrence. Thanks for your help.
