Your MacBook is capable of OS 10.11 El Capitan.

get El Capitan from the App Store

If you cannot contact the AppStore you need to install the original OS from the DVDs the Mac shipped with and then upgrade to 10.6.8 to get the AppStore and upgrade to El Capitan from there.

If to was not wiped clean by the previous owner here's what you need to do:
