I’m going to be editing something in Final Cut Pro 7. My original footage is h264 QuickTime. My output will be MP4. What codec should I use to edit in that doesn’t take up too much drive space? I usually edit with 422 pro Rez. But maybe I could you something smaller? Thanks
ProRes 422 is what FCP X likes.
I'd run with that.
There is also ProRes 422LT which is about 30% smaller if my memory serves.
LT to mp4 should be fine.

All the ProRes formats from HQ down were available from the beginning. LT was always a good choice for H.264 media that was HD or smaller. It was a commonly used codec i and transfer window.
It's been that long since I've used FCPro I'm not sure if LT was around.
I think it was.
In any case what I stated should work ok.
FCP X definitely can use ProRes LT.
