Since the device is a magnetic inductive charger, I would venture to guess that the pitting is caused by that charging process. It may even be interfering with a proper charge.
If it were mine, I would have it replaced. Mine will be starting its 3rd year of service, and it looks as bright and shiny as new.
Hi @Ferd II. Apologies for the picture, you are right, it looks like a blue tone but that is just how the picture was taken. The cable is original (it came with the apple watch) so it is white (or used to be). I take reasonable care of it, but my query is based on the dots (different colour) in the centre of the circle and what look like pits (different texture) in there as well.
Any ideas?

To me the charger looks fake, or coated with some type of paint.
