If you are seeing each other's messages this is because you are signed into the same Apple ID in Settings > Messages > Send and Receive. You will want to sign out to stop receiving each other's messages. You can set up different Apple ID's for your family members using Family Sharing: HT201060 and https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201088
