Tom is the really expert here, but I'd say one of these fonts is bad...
The font is probably corrupt

Those are for Arabic. The ones for Tamil are called Tamil MN and Tamil Sangam and Inaimathi
Thanks for the picture! It's possible you have a conflicting bad font. Go to Applications > Font Book and do File > Restore Standard Fonts and then restart your machine.

and download and install the font Noto Sans Tamil and see if that helps.
