Redbox Apple Card incompatibility

If you use the Redbox app to reserve your movies and use the Apple Card number in your Redbox account, the physical card will not recognize you when you swipe it at the kiosk. The number encoded on the physical card is not the same as the credit card number in the wallet app. I have contacted Apple and Redbox about this. You will probably see this same issue if ordering something online or over the phone and have to present your credit card at a local merchant to pick up your order. Only the last 4 digits of the physical card number is available to the account holder in the wallet setting.

Not sure if I’m answering the question, if you’re asking what I think you’re asking or if I’m being helpful but I don’t think anyone would be able to make a reservation through the RedBox app and be able to pick it up at a kiosk. The reason is because the kiosk is looking to match card numbers; the card number you used in the app and the card number that was swiped at the kiosk will always be different. This is a security feature put in place by Apple and your bank to avoid fraud. When I add my bank card to my wallet app on my iPhone the bank and Apple actually issue a new card number for the app. The card number on my phone will never match the number on the actual physical bank card; this is intentional.

They are, in fact, adding NFC to their kiosks now. But that won’t help this issue until/unless they allow paying for reservations with ApplePay so that you can present the same “card” when you pay for reservations and pick them up. Or, better yet, use the NFC capability to make an app-to-kiosk authentication that’s independent of payment method entirely.

Agreed, same thing happened to me. Been using the physical card at several places and I came across the reservation/pickup issue at Redbox a few days ago. Had to “chat” online with Redbox support for them to cancel the reservation. Went back to the kiosk and swiped the card just fine without a reservation. Thought maybe something was wrong with what I did but good to know it’s not just me.
