Hello I recently was given a ipad 2 64gb which is activation lock this person has moved to London now and I have no way to get in touch with him and they are there for good so calling sending them a letter will be out of the question now. what can I do now don't want to throw it away a perfectly good ipad.

Firstly it is never a good idea to include personal information, such as your email address, on public forums.
There is no way around unlocking Activation Lock without inserting the device’s associated Apple ID. Not even Apple will unlock Activation Lock since you do not have the original purchase receipt which shows the serial number of the device. The only way you can use this iPad is to track down the individual who gave it to you and ask them to remove the iPad from their iCloud account.
