Screen freezes - Mouse still moves, sound still plays? - Mac Pro 2013

Hi all, I have a Mac Pro (Late 2013) and for the last few months at random points my screen image freezes but my mouse still moves (no rainbow wheel) and I can still hear gameplay/video/music playing as normal. I can also interact with whatever windows I had open but the screen just remains frozen and I am forced to Hold the power button on my Pro to turn it off manually and restart it, or press the apple icon and guess where the 'Shut down..' or 'Restart..' button would be and press there to restart the mac.

  • I have 2 Monitors and the freeze happens across both monitors.

Anyone have any suggestions on this?

Thanks - Podgy.

Hi P0DGY,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. I understand that the display on your Mac Pro unexpectedly freezes. I'll be happy to help and point you in the right direction.

I recommend resetting the NVRAM (nonvolatile random-access memory) on your Mac. This can help resolve the issue you're experiencing with the display. Here's a helpful article with additional details and the proper steps to reset the NVRAM: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

In addition, you'll want to make sure that you have the latest update for the macOS version. This helps provide software improvements and enhanced security updates on your Mac Pro. If needed, here's how to update the macOS version: How to update the software on your Mac

Best regards.
