A friend sent me money yesterday but it’s still not showing up in my wallet

I’m new to iPhone and Apple Pay. A friend said they sent me money yesterday but it’s still not showing up in my wallet. This is the first time either one of us is using Apple Pay. My settings are set to receive payments automatically. Is there a step we may have missed?
