External monitor will not display at its native resolution

After my upgrade from a 2014 to a 2019 MacBook Pro, one of my two external monitors will not display at its native resolution, nor is that choice available through Preferences. Previously, it was connected via a digital video adapter to a Thunderbolt port and the other connected via HDMI. Now both are on HDMI and the one previously on digital can't get to the right resolution. Very frustrating. Any help will be appreciated.

Try using extended desktop mode instead of mirror display mode. Mirror display also mirrors the display resolution. Extended desktop mode allows you to select the native resolution of the external displays
