Where is the iCloud Sync Now button to cause the iCloud files (that are updated) to sync to the Mac??? Why isn't iCloud designed to automatically stay up to date?

iCloud should be syncing automatically, although the sync can be very, very slow at times. To force a sync, in System Preferences/iCloud, stop syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then check syncing. Allow time for the sync to complete.
Last resort - have you tried signing out of iCloud and then sign back in?
"very, very slow" I'm imagining iCloud as the Mac Plus of online services only without the useful little watch icon frozen in time. The files were saved around 4pm and did not Finder sync until almost 10pm. I'm not sure if it was refreshing the finder window that did it, or fiddling around viewing the files in the online iCloud account but finally the iCloud Drive showed the files in the finder window without unchecking the sync box or sign out/sign in (though it could have been the single sign in online).
