Why does my Photos icon on my dock have a red number on it?

If you ‘follow’ any shared iCloud photo albums, then this number would be a notification for new photos or comments on photos.

If you want, you can turn it off in System Preferences﹥Notifications﹥Photos﹥Badge app icon.

a red 1 on Apple Photo icon There is a red 1 on the Apple Photos icon in my dock. I can't seem to figure out what it refers to.
