Location can not be determined?

Hey.

I have submitted the location to Skyhook Wireless, I have ran a program that you type in a MAC address and it tells you the physical location, it tells me my exact location...

But still, on my iPod touch when im connected to this wifi point and hit the Find Me button in the built in Maps app I get an error "Your location could not be determined".

Skyhook have tested it and say that it's definitely in the database correctly so they have told me to contact apple about the issue as they expect its my iPod touch.

I have rebooted it several times to see if this fixed it, it didn't.

Any ideas?

I couldn't find any way of contacting apple about this myself, can anyone give me a hand about that?

Thanks,
Nick

When you changed routers, did you submit the new router's MAC address to Skyhook? Also, do realize that you don't submit your Touch's MAC address to Skyhook, you submit your router/access point's address.

My iPod has no restrictions, this isn't the problem.

Yes, I have submitted the new MAC address to skyhook, who have tested it, as have I, and the database has the correct data for this MAC. FOr some reason my iPod can't access this.

13 more days til I get my iPhone 4 😀 Hopefully it will work OK and I won't have to worry about my iPod anymore.

Got an email from Skyhook today:

Hello -

Skyhook's software is not running on iOS 4-enabled devices. We continue to
support devices running OS 1.1.3 and 3.1. If you are looking for improved
location performance on an iPhone, you can submit an access point to the
Skyhook database will result in improved location on OS 1.1.3 and 3.1 devices,
but not iOS 4. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Thanks,
Krystle

This makes me wonder, what does apple use for the assisted GPS in iOS4?
There has to be something...

Many people (myself included) noticed that Location Services stopped working with the upgrade to iOS 4.0. The symptom is that Maps and other apps say "Your location could not be determined." even in areas that used to work. The problem is that starting in iOS 3.2 and iOS 4.0, Apple switched from using the SkyHook location database to using their own. Whereas the SkyHook database had the ability for users to add their own WiFi access points, Apple does not have anyway for us to do that.

I just spent over an hour on the phone with Apple Support senior advisors, who initially wanted to restore my unit or even replace it (neither of which would have fixed it), until I found the news reports about Apples new location database. Eventually, I found a senior advisor who was able to track down the problem and admitted that, yes, since the switch from SkyHook to Apple's own database, many WiFi access points no longer work with location services. "Apple is working on the problem, and eventually it will be fixed, although there isn't any time estimate." I asked specifically if this meant that Apple was going to allow users to add their own WiFi access points, and she said "Yes."

They can't implement this fast enough!

A vast majority of users are now left without location services after using them religiously for several months if not years... not to mention this is one of the major reasons for purchasing an iOS device.

I honestly can't recommend that my friends and family buy a new iPhone or iPod Touch until this service is restored.

Über short-sightedness on Apples part here.
