It's not the software, it's the hardware which is required for Face ID. An iPhone 8 does NOT have the required hardware to EVER use Face ID. It requires a True Depth camera, which only iPhone X, Xr, Xs, 11 and 11 Pro has.


If you'd like Face ID (it is a nice feature), you'd need a newer phone.

See - About Face ID advanced technology - Apple Support. The true depth camera and the infrared projection light that maps the points to your face are hardware built into the “notch” on the display of the iPhones with it. You also need the right Apple processor to handle the data. So faceID is a combination of the right hardware and iOS. iOS itself cannot implement faceID without the necessary hardware.


The new iPhone 11 and 11 Pro have even gone beyond the X and Xs by adding a second true depth camera with a wid(er) angle lens to speed up faceID and improve the distance over which it will work.
