Uninstall Sophos

Can anyone help with instructions on uninstalling Sophos please? I am unable to login so the uninstaller is no use at the moment and it won’t work without logging in. Please help. Thank you

It is not fully uninstalled. Go to the Sophos website to find the proper uninstalling instructions or see below:

Basics for Uninstalling Software

Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them at the above location and delete them, too.

Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. If you cannot find the uninstaller then you could download the freeware, Easy Find, to locate files that need to be removed. The places you need to search include:

  1. /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. Check if the application has created a folder then delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.
  2. Applications may install a startupitem or a LogIn item. StartupItems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder or the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Login Items are set in the Users & Groups preferences. Open it in System Preferences, then click on the Login Items tab. Select the item from the list and click on the Delete [-] button to remove it.
  3. Some software use startup daemons or agents.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.

Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.

There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:

Unless you can login to the computer you will not be able to remove anything let alone Sophos. So your first step is to make sure you can login to the computer.

You could try booting your Mac in 'safe mode' which disables software like Sophos but should let you login. See - Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Assuming you can login to the computer then read on…

Sophos Home Edition can be uninstalled by going to your /Applications folder. In there you will see an app called 'Remove Sophos'. (Or similar.)

If you are using Sophos Cloud Edition - normally this applies to businesses then you likely will get asked for a 'Tamper Protection Password'. This is obtained by logging in to the Sophos Central Cloud system as an administrator and finding the specific Mac in the list and then the specific password for that device.

It is a long time since I have used the Sophos Enterprise version which uses a Windows Server but it may be a similar process as Sophos Cloud but you would use the Windows Server app to authorise uninstalling Sophos.

The password will either be the password for an admin level user account on your Mac or it will be the Tamper Protection Password. Even the free Sophos Home edition now has some administration features on the Sophos website.

However I think it most likely it is asking for the password of your Macs admin level user account.

If you go to System Preferences -> Users & Groups it will show you a list of all the user accounts on your Mac and you can see which have Admin level privileges.

If you have forgotten the password for the relevant account then try the following.

Hello. Pardon me it took me a while to respond. Called Apple customer service and they just moved it to trash n had me empty trash. I did that initially and attempted to reinstall but i got a prompt that it was already installed. Anyway, I haven’t tried reinstalling this time around but I pray it’s resolved.
