The only thing Apple has said is the update to watchOS 6 for the Series 1 and 2 will be released "sometime later in the year." As you have discovered it will not accept the one released today.

You may have the Original watch....which is not updatable beyond OS 4.3.2. Series one should accept OS 6 which has been released today.
