Creating a Separate Email Address

I want to create a separate email address for a small home business with an independent identity. I'd prefer to avoid gmail and hoped I could create an additional Mac Mail account. Is this possible? The only option I can see is how to add an additional email address/account the exists already whereas I want to create a completely new one.

You could create an AppleID for your business which would come with it's own email account, but you'd need a valid, unique email address to use. You could create a gmail address for that purpose.

You can add additional iCloud accounts to your Mac which gives access to the main types of things, email, contacts, calendars.

That would essentially keep things separate on your personal Mac, although they would appear in the account for you.

You could create a new account on your Mac that signs into that new iCloud account, keeping things completely separate.

I don't know if Apple has a policy regarding using an iCloud account for business, though.
