how do i backup a macbook pro running yosemite 10.10.5?

Can I use Icloud?

I am trying to upgrade the OS so I can install garmin express which requires OS 10.11 or higher

Do not back up to the iCloud it would take hours if not days, and be expensive. Back up to an external drive for speed and convenience. Use Time Machine.
